EA promotes pay-to-play BF2 Combat mod

The latest Battlefield 2 Community Update highlights the BF2 Combat: The Battlefield 2 Tour of Duty mod (it has nothing to do with the cult tv series though), made by the Planet Combat team. Here is word on the content:

BF2 Combat, the Battlefield 2 Tour of Duty, is a unique community which will allow players to experience Battlefield 2 as never before. Featuring multiple ten-hour battles every week (of which members can attend as many or as little as they like) the Tour of Duty offers members a hierarchically-structured environment replete with cool features. During signup, people have the option of enlisting to fight for the United States Army or Marine Corps, the Middle Eastern Coalition Armies, or the People's Liberation Army. All divisions offer the same superior game experience. Players can elect to participate in a variety of programs, including an Army Ranger School designed by real US Army Rangers and a wide swath of qualifications. Perhaps the coolest thing about the Tour of Duty is that the world changes dynamically not only after each battle but also after each three month Tour. That means generals are able to decide what areas they will attack next, and the maps played will reflect these decisions. Members will also be able to bring their unlocked weapons in on battle day and will get priority selection for BF2 Combat's public ranked servers.
So this mod adds a persistent flavour to Battlefield 2. With the approval of EA, heavy clansupport and enough servers in Europe it all looks too good to be true. There is a catch however and that is the fact that participants will need to pay a fee for this mod. Apparently, this isn't the only mod that'll provide this kind of experience as there is also the 21st Century Warfare project for BF2.

Another point of interest in the community update is a new and improved ranked server admin program, also made by the people behind the BF2 Combat mod:

This unique system will allow all players the opportunity to moderate the experience they are having on our servers and have a positive impact on the communities in which they play. As well as servicing the EA Official Servers, you will also encounter Planet Combat teams on NVIDIA servers, Zboard servers, and Game Daemons servers.

Starting immediately the Planet Combat Admin team will begin to enforce about players breaking the EA's Terms of Service (which all users accepted upon creating their BF2 account), including those exploiting the stat system -- medic cheaters we're looking at you! -- or others exhibiting obnoxious behavior. Players breaking the Terms of Service are subject to kicks, short-term bans and even system-wide permanent bans. Additionally, exploiters will have their stats busted down by EA's Customer Support team.
Nice that stat cheaters will get punished (on a limited number servers though).

But EA probably didn't yet think of doing something about the excessive unintended teamkilling (and thus the many kicks) caused by the highly damaging physical contact with vehicles or the mysterious enemy tags appearing on friendly troops.

More positive is the news that the mod toolkit has gone into Closed Beta phase. It should be out within a couple of days too.

The concept doesn't sound bad and the price isn't that much but I have yet to see a mod that does everything right from the first time. When they already start charging people from the start, then there won't be much audience for such an initiative I think.

Game producers and publishers are dying to get the "pay-per-play" feautre integrated into gaming on top of us paying for the actual game purchase but they know they can't just add it since ppl won't pay that extra fee so they will try to "sneak" it in gradually, step-by-step, like in this case, to make us acustomed to it little-by-little...only way to prevent Per-Per-Play happening ever happening will probably be to stay away from anything with "Pay-Per-Play" in it - and even that probably won't help in the long run *SIGH*

IF they would introduce a massive war scaled 64 vs 64 person tournament id pay happily but sofar 64 people seems the max ( a max that was already achieved by a game called tribbes 2 ... from the year 2001 ZZZZzzzZZZ 2005 people starts fucking working on that netcode GRRR

The pay-per-play concept could work, but only when the gameplay has a *real* added-value. I enjoy BF2 on its own, I don't need no mod to enjoy it even more.

... besides that... this mod sounds like it's made for and by fucked-up war-affectionados.

We already pay through the nose for everything and EA has delivered a totally f..ked up pice of shit. If theyactually worked the code, so that it made it impossible to cheat, then I would have less to bitch about.
