EA revamps NFS series, cuts it in four

Posted on Saturday, 31 January 2009 by Speed, source: Eurogamer
Electronic Arts has unveiled that this year will see a reboot of the entire Need for Speed franchise and in a big way: the series will be cut into three distinct games.

First up there will be Need for Speed: Shift created by Slightly Mad Studios (GT Legends) which will focus on the simulation part.

Need for Speed: Nitro will take on the arcade role of the series and is being developed by EA Montreal.

And then there's Need for Speed: World Online which is a "Play 4 Free" action racer that will first be released in Asia and will make it to the rest of the world IF it's succesful over there. Development is headed by Black Box and EA Singapore.

Also a fourth game is under development but there's no more details available.

I would hope it would end the series and it has been needing to shot to put it out of it's misery. But knowing EA they will flog it beyond the grave....

I'm very confident that devs who made GTL can make decent NFS game too. GTL is one of finest racing sims ever.
So it's definetly not the end of the series. IMO the series died long ago. NFS: Porsche was the last good one.
I think this as a rebirth of the series...

Actually I think this is the best thing for the series, it targets pretty much all audiences of the racing genre. What its going to do is reveal which type of racing game has a bigger market.

My prediction is that the Play 4 Free version will be a huge success, and that one of the other two will also do well, and the third least successful game will get the axe, probably along with the development team that produced it. Its a pretty smart move by EA.
