EA reveals last quarter financials & forecast

Posted on Tuesday, 10 November 2009 by Speed, source: EA
Yesterday, rumours started popping up all over that Electronic Arts was laying off 1500 people and now we know why: despite a record quarterly net revenue of $1.147 billion, the publisher made a net loss of $391 million.

As a result, EA is going to cut 1500 jobs (following the 1100 job cuts earlier this year) and focus on less but higher marging titles.
EA has announced a plan to narrow its product portfolio to provide greater focus on titles with higher margin opportunities.

This action will result in the closure of several facilities and a headcount reduction of approximately 1,500 positions, of which 1,300 are included in a restructuring plan. The majority of these actions will be completed by March 31, 2010. This plan will result in annual cost savings of at least $100 million and restructuring charges of $130 to $150 million.
During a conference call to talk about its financial results, Electronic Arts' execs stated "over a dozen" of upcoming titles have been cancelled. Which ones exactly have gotten the axe is yet unknown. I guess we'll hear that in the coming weeks/months.

In any case, it seems Electronic Arts no longer is committed to innovation and risk

Anyhow, those big publishers can tout their creativity all they want, that won't stop them from releasing plenty of mediocre 'earn a quick buck' type of games and ports. I can just feel that they won't change their ways all that much.
Seems I was right :)
