EA slashes hundreds, killing Warhammer Online? *Update*
Posted on Monday, 9 November 2009 by Speed, source: BitemyReview
Update: EA has issued a press release, announcing a total of 1500 job cuts and closures of several facilities in order to cut costs.
Original Post:
It seems that endless free trial may not be something to be happy about.
EA Corporate indiders are stating that Electronic Arts will be slashing up to 1000 people worldwide while Mythic Entertainment's creative departments seem to be hit most. Therefore Mythic's assets are going into "maintenance" mode.
That endless trial now seems not so great after all, doesn't it? Why would you want to trial a game that seems destined to go down?
Meanwhile, Kotaku heard similar reports that also state EA Tiburon and Black Box, respectively known for Tiger Woods and Need for Speed games. It seems the creative teams aren't the only ones getting the axe as also EA Redwood Shores' quality assurance team seems impacted by the layoffs.
Irony: all these rumours started popping up on the same time EA announced they acquired social gaming publisher Playfish. I guess with the integration of that company, there's plenty more jobs that can be cut.
Electronic Arts will be posting its quarterly results soon so we'll probably get more clarification on what's going on then.
"This action will result in the closure of several facilities and a headcount reduction of approximately 1,500 positions, of which 1,300 are included in a restructuring plan. The majority of these actions will be completed by March 31, 2010. This plan will result in annual cost savings of at least $100 million and restructuring charges of $130 to $150 million."
The same press release regarding EA's financials also states the revenue for the 2nd quarter arrived at $1.147 billion, up 2 percent from the same time last year. Guess that increased revenue still doesn't bring in enough profit...Original Post:
