EVE Online becomes a democracy

You want to control this?
CCP Games, developers of the very succesful space-MMORPG EVE Online has announced that their game will be the first where the virtual world will be controlled by democratically elected players.

The "Council of Stellar Management" will exist out of nine representatives and five reserves that will be elected every six months. The first of those will take place between the fifth and nineteenth of May and candidates can already come forward.

The Council will not only control the society and economy of the gameworld but will also get a say in the further development of EVE.

"EVE Online has evolved from an MMORPG to a virtual world with a virtual society. It is our role as its caretakers to evolve our approach as well, through economics research, political science or other aspects of operations or development," said CCP boss Hilmar Petursson.

"A democratic election process of representatives is one of mankind's greatest inventions. We are bringing a version of that to EVE now with hope of it allowing us to expand EVE Online in a similar way to what we've seen on Earth."
With almost 250.000 active subscriptions the MMO is a huge success (it blew away EA's space MMOG back in the days) and it keeps growing. Those that are interested can always take a look through Steam.

I think Blizzard has already banned over 250,000 accounts in WoW for malicious action... Puts things in perspective, eh?

EVE is the only space MMORPG with this kind of userbase. Guess that puts things in perspective as well. And don't ignore the fact that CCP Games is an independent developer working without a publisher while Blizzard is a massive company. If you want to compare things, compare apples with apples :)

Oh, don't get me wrong. I fully support all MMOs that break the trend -- especially EVE. Pirates of the Burning Sea is another one that I'm very happy was made. Infact, I'm very much looking forward to Jumpgate II.
