Epic: Facebook might save PC gaming
Posted on Monday, 17 May 2010 by Speed, source: TheSixthAxis
Time for some "piracy is killing PC gaming" quotes again!
Epic Games' president Mike Capps said in the latest issue of Edge that the reason why they're working almost exclusively for console is because that's where the money is at and that PC is (almost) dead due to piracy:
Until then, for me this is utter b*ll with which they try to justify a move towards consoles because it's the cheap and easy thing to do. And if everyone is so nagging about piracy, why don't we hear about DS piracy so often then? That's 10 times worse than piracy on PC!
Epic Games' president Mike Capps said in the latest issue of Edge that the reason why they're working almost exclusively for console is because that's where the money is at and that PC is (almost) dead due to piracy:
“If you walked into [Epic's Offices] six years ago,” said Capps, “Epic was a PC company. We did one PS2 launch title, and everything else was PC. And now, people are saying ‘Why do you hate the PC? You’re a console-only company.’”
“And guess what?” he says, “It’s because the money’s on console.”
“We still do PC, we still love the PC, but we already saw the impact of piracy: it killed a lot of great independent developers and completely changed our business model.” Capps discusses the rise of free-to-play microtransaction based games, like Farmville, the “biggest game of all right now.”
“So, maybe Facebook will save PC gaming,” he concludes, “but it’s not going to look like Gears of War.”
Now, if ANY developer or publisher would come out with some ACTUAL figures on piracy that's not based on countries where 90% of their games aren't available (China f.i. comes to mind) and doesn't count every pirated copy as a "loss in revenue" but does a DECENT study about how much piracy is costing them and how much less piracy there would be if PC games would be priced lower, THEN I might dig this constant blabbering about PC piracy. “And guess what?” he says, “It’s because the money’s on console.”
