Episode 1 to be released as a stand-alone
Half-Life 2: Episode 1 won't actually require Half-Life 2 to play, Valve's explained, and although the game will be "four to six hours" long, marketing director Doug Lombardi reckons it's "markedly richer" in terms of content quality.
The price is estimated at $20. Knowing that this includes multiplayer features and that the singleplayer campaign will take around four to six hours to complete, I'm pretty sure no one will call that expensive.
