European PS3 gets smaller Cell chip

Earlier this month, we got to hear the PAL PlayStation 3 would have limitations to its backwards compatibility and today we've got more news about the coming EU PS3.

What's more, Sony aims to roll out Cell chips with a smaller circuity width (the new ones will be 65-nanometers as compared to the current 90-nano ones). Narrow circuitry means smaller chips, lowering production costs.

We're not sure how this shift will affect the quality of the machine, but once again, us Europeans are getting something else than the yanks and japs.

I don't think this will make any difference to the power of the machine except it looks like it should run cooler and that is surley a good thing.

this will actualy help cooling as it will use less energy and output less.... same as why the 360 is moving to the 65nm process

Sony are seriously violating the golden rule of consoles being as similar as possible to enable developers to develop games much easier. Now they're going to have to test their games on different versions of the PS3. As if developing for the PS3 wasn't hard enough already.

One question WHY? It's still the same machine. This is common place in the life of any electrical product as time goes by technology moves forward, components get smaller and cheaper to produce that’s all. The actual architecture of the machine is still the same and the power of the machine remains the same. I really don’t see any issue here at all.

If there is any other reason please enlighten me.

All kind of chips are made smaller and smaller, it's common within the entire chip industry so it should be a good thing since it means the Cell chip will be cheaper to manufacture, it will need less power to operate and it will be cooler - or it can on the other hand be clocked higher for better performance if Sony wants that...
M$ is doing the same with the Xbox 360 that's going from 90nm to 65nm, AMD is doing the same with their current line of processors and Intel went through that process recently.

What would be a good thing is that if Sony were to release a "slimline" PS3 in Europe instead of that big brick block they've released in Asia and US...
Since we're talking about things getting smaller...

THAT = so as to, with the intention of, with the purpose of, with the aim of, or even to facilitate. If you mean what does Xbotx mean I have no idea either.
