Everyone hates E3
Posted on Friday, 18 July 2008 by Speed, source: San Francisco Chronicle
It seems E3 was a disappointment to many and game publishers are ranking up to tell so.
Talking to the San Francisco Chronicle, Electronic Arts' CEO John Riccitiello even plain stated he hated the show in its current form:
Talking to the San Francisco Chronicle, Electronic Arts' CEO John Riccitiello even plain stated he hated the show in its current form:
"I hate E3 like this. Either we need to go back to the old E3, or we'll have to have our own private events."
Ubisoft America's president, Laurent Detoc, wasn't much kinder to the show:"E3 this year is terrible. The world used to come to E3. Now it's like a pipe-fitters show in the basement."
Can we get some more positive words? Well, Sega of America's president Simon Jeffery said he wouldn't want to go back to the old E3 (not that he liked this one so much):Sega of America's president, Simon Jeffery, said he doesn't want to go back to the days when he would spend $5 million on E3. But he said there should be some more flash to bring back retailers, who have abandoned the show
Meanwhile, MSNBC had a chat with Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto who said that E3 has not only changed in size but also in target audience (resulting in different publisher focus):For a very long time, E3 was an event where — and certainly Nintendo included — catered specifically to the core gamer. Now we look at more … an opportunity for us to introduce new concepts and new types of play that we intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now.
So while attending an E3 event like this, they might be given the impression that Nintendo is no longer focusing on the games that appeal to the core gamer, in fact we’re still working on many of those titles, but it’s just not the type of event where we’ll be showcasing that anymore
Having been at several previous versions of E3, I remember the "good old days" when it was clear that the show was the place to be (despite it being chaos and hell for a couple of days). Now it sounded like a dull event where everyone was telling pretty much a similar story while nobody was interested in hearing. So while attending an E3 event like this, they might be given the impression that Nintendo is no longer focusing on the games that appeal to the core gamer, in fact we’re still working on many of those titles, but it’s just not the type of event where we’ll be showcasing that anymore
