Ex-God Games bigwigs launch Gamecock

Posted on Monday, 12 February 2007 by Ryuken, source: NYTimes
Mike Wilson and Larry Miller, both ex-God Games (God=Gathering of Developers) executives, have announced their newest project in the New York Times: the Gamecock Media Group, with "cock" having the normal meaning behind it of course.

Gamecock will be a publisher, but not one of the usual kind:

The idea is that Gamecock, based in Austin, Tex., will finance games with reasonable budgets, ask developers to share in the risk and outsource distribution to keep its costs low. The company is being financed by a single investor, who has declined to be identified.

They want to give more power, the rights to the intellectual property and more royalties to the developers. That comes at the price of bigger risk too.

“We want to bring some fun back to the game business,” said Mike Wilson, Gamecock’s chief executive. “We can make games that look like anything out there for less money.”

“Most of the big publishers are publicly held, and Wall Street wants you to own trucks and have a floor of accountants and grow by a certain amount every year,” Mr. Wilson said. He said he hoped to foster an artist-friendly environment in which the name of the developer, not the publisher, was identified with a game.

Titles they will be publishing are Hero (a new action-rpg from Firefly Studios), Fury (an MMOG from Auran), Hail to the Chimp (created by one of Bungie's founders), Mushroom Men, Insecticide and more...

Hopefully for them they'll last longer than God Games (which was acquired by Take-Two Interactive in 1999). Anyway, be sure to check out the funny official Gamecock-site.
