Fragland Budget Gaming System

Posted on Monday, 28 June 2004 by Speed, source: Fragland
It's a big difference between a hi-end system and a budget rig and we're not only talking about price but also about performance. Still, every month we try to put something together for around 500 euro's (give or take a few) that should give you enough power to play your favorite games (although maybe not at the highest resolution with all details on)

Case:
- Antec Solution SLK2650 Black Quiet Mid Tower 350W
Price: €78
This case is similar to Antec's SLK3700 which is a very quiet case including a 350Watt power supply for a very decent price. A decent option for any budget system.

Power Supply:
- Included in case
Price: €0
The power supply that comes along with the Antec case is a decent 350Watt one that can even be used for an Athlon64 so no need to go shopping for anything else

CPU:
- AMD AthlonXP 2500+ Boxed (incl. Cooler)
Price: €84
The 2500+ is the cheapest competitor on the block with still decent performance and if you find one of the older builds or the mobile version it will also be a very good overclocker that can easily be brought up to speeds of an AthlonXP 3000+

Mobo:
- Asus A7N8X-X nForce2 DDR400 AGP8X Snd5.1 LAN
Price: €67
For 67 euro's you wouldn't expect much but Asus does manage to deliver a high-end motherboard with enough features based on the nForce2 chipset. Decent stability and speed for a very reasonable price

Memory:
- Kingston Valueram 512MB PC3200 DDR
Price: €106
Kingston is known for high quality memory and now that their line of affordable memory is also available over here this is the way to go. Decent speed, good reliability and lifetime warranty. What can a man ask more ?

Vidcard:
- ASUS V9570LE TD GFFX5700LE 128DDR AGP8X TV-out DVI
Price: €115
We keep with the card we chose last time which is Asus' GeforceFX 5700LE. With a blue PCB and copper cooler it looks pretty cool and what's even better is the package: AGP8x, TV-Out, DVI, Asus' Gameface, Dual VGA possibility and three full games along with the usual software bundle. Great value and even DirectX9 compatible

Soundcard:
- On-board
Price: €0
Low budget means that we won't be spending money on stuff we already have and the on-board sound of the nForce2 motherboard from Asus is more than enough for your basic gaming experiences.

Harddisk:
- Maxtor DM+9 80GB 7200RPM ATA133 FDB 8MB
Price: €74
Low Budget but fast and silent, that's the way we like it. The 80GB doesn't give a lot of room but should be sufficient for a budget system and the 8MB cache give this disk enough of a speed boost to make sure this isn't going to be your main bottleneck.

Optical Drive:
- ASUS DVD-E616 DVD 16X/48X IDE Black
Price: €32
A very cheap but still reliable and fast dvd reader from a company that's known for producing quality. You can't go wrong.

Total price: €556,00
Just over the budget of 500 euro, we do manage to put together a DirectX 9 compatible system that gives you the basics for some gaming fun. We ditched the floppy drive which we still used last time but overall our budget gaming system is about 80 euro's cheaper than last month.
