Funcom loses $23M, CFO and Age of Conan subscribers

Funcom has posted its financial results for the fourth quarter of 2008 and if there's one thing to be said it's that they are les than stellar. They lost a little over $23M and the game to blame for most of it is Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures.

According to E24 the game has lost so many subscribers that the total which was once over 700,000 has now dropped below 100,000 players. This huge drop is explained by the company as "shorter average subscription periods than anticipated" which, in my opinion, just means that players got bored too quickly.

In the aftermath of the financial woes Funcom's chief financial officer decided to quit and it is rumoured that there might be more to follow.

many of the features weren't ready at launch and MMORPG players are people who only give a new MMORPG 30 days of time to convince them to subscribe.

They won't throw risk it later to give it a second chance, because then they have to subscribe immediately.

not to mention that I couldn't get a trial without entering my credit card details, so I just didn't bother.

Hardcore MMO players actually can and have given past games many months to finish their development.

Where FUncom screwed up was by not treating the bulk of their player base with respect. You don't get the sort of loyalty they needed without it.
