1Up is reporting that yesterday evening, during a conf call on its results, Take2 let a bomb fall and announced that Grand Theft Auto 4 will not be released before 2008

"With Grand Theft Auto IV, Rockstar is setting a new standard for next generation video games," stated Strauss Zelnick, Chairman of Take-Two. "Certain elements of development proved to be more time-intensive than expected, especially given the commitment for a simultaneous release on two very different platforms. We all recognize that perfecting the game is vital and I can assure everyone it will be worth the wait. We owe it to the game's millions of fans, to our dedicated development team, and to our shareholders to make sure that Grand Theft Auto IV is a groundbreaking gaming experience that takes maximum advantage of next generation technology."

Yup. The only shame in it for me, is that the longer they delay the console launch, the longer I have to wait to get it on PC a year later.

Actually i was a bit surprised, because GTA games since GTA3 have always been released on fall. Or am i wrong ?
2008 fall is too far away, they can't possibly delay it that much.

If you had been keeping up with GTA4 then you would know it got quite bad feedback from what people have seen of it running, bad framerate and pop up being the most obvious problems with it, its obviously being delayed to fix these problems and make sure when we do get GTA4 in our hands it will be the best it can be.

Would you rather they released an unfinished game just so you get it when you thought you was going to or delay it so it will be better, i've not seen any comments about the 360 version being superior so i dont know where that came from, both the trailers we have seen so far are of 360 footage yes but if anything the 360 has had the negative feedback but purely because of the lesser disc space compared to Sony's Bluray.

When a game of this magnitude gets delayed its only for the better, theres loads of other games out this year anyway so its not like anyone could be bored without GTA4.

Analyst Michael Pachter believes Rockstar has delayed the release of Grand Theft Auto IV because it is struggling with development on the PlayStation 3, GamesIndustry.biz is reporting.

And the Xbox 360 version of the game has suffered at least a six month delay as a result, due to contractual obligations that will have prevented the publisher from releasing the game first on Microsoft's machine, says the anal

"We think it is likely that the Rockstar team had difficulty in building an exceptionally complicated game for the PS3, and failed to recognise how far away from completion the game truly was until recently," said Pachter.

"We think it is also likely that Take-Two had a contractual commitment to Sony that it would not favour competitor Microsoft by launching the Xbox 360 version of GTA IV prior to launching the PS3 version, and believe that any delay of the PS3 version necessitated a delay of the Xbox 360 version," he added.

This failure to recognise development problems could dent investor confidence in the publisher, even after it has taken steps to improve the green light process for software development.

"Take-Two management stumbled badly for the first time during their tenure," commented Pachter.

"While the delay of GTA IV was clearly not the fault of new management, we believe that it should have been better understood several months ago, and should have been communicated to investors much earlier than today.

"The company has begun an initiative to improve the green light process for new projects, but given the delays of Manhunt and GTA, its process for monitoring projects under development appears to be a failure," he said.
