Games are a pornography of violence

Well, quite a statement don't you think ? This statement comes from UK Labour minister of Culture Kim Howells who stated this in a newspaper interview as Gamesindustry.biz is reporting
Howells, who is a father of three, criticised the "heartlessness" of videogames, accusing them of creating a "pornography of violence" and of "playing to the lowest common denominator, which is a kind of vicarious pleasure in spilling blood".

"I look at the video games my kids play... and I see no humanity at all, nothing that tries to highlight and underpin the finer virtues that are in people and society", he told the newspaper. Film and television came in for criticism in the same terms, with Howells singling out cop drama Serious and Organised and cult flicks Pulp Fiction and Trainspotting.
Rather than once again pointing at Games and Movies and TV-series, these politicians should look at themselves. I won't deny that certain games are really violent and don't have too much real content (see f.i. Rockstar Games' State of Emergency) but again pulling all games over the same line is a bit too much. Are elections coming up in the UK maybe ? Why else would a politician start nagging about a certain industry which is extremely popular and has little possibility to defend itself... ?

Perhaps he should buy other games for his kids ?!? That might help :)
Because now he sounds like a bad parent to me...

Looks stupid indeed. Buying f.i. Grand Theft Auto 3 for your kids, and then complain they play violent games...
