Gamespy vs Norton

Posted on Saturday, 3 December 2005 by AlterEgo, source: Fragland
Friday night means Virus- and spywarescan at Casa AlterEgo... and what do I find? Let's have the images speak for themselves! (sorry, they are in dutch, but you'll probably understand)

Indeed: Norton tags Gamespy as adware!

Behavior
Adware.GameSpyArcade is a game server browser that displays advertisements when the compromised computer is connected to the Internet through its customized browser.

Let's see what Gamespy has to say on the matter:

In Norton 2005 Symantec inadvertently listed GameSpy Arcade (aphex.exe) as Adware. This is a mistake and hopefully they will update their definitions soon. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Customer Support.

What I find disturbing is that the entry made in the Gamespy Support page was dated 1/3/2005, a fact that does not lift my mood, as I've never seen this problem in previous scans!

Let's get a second and hopefully objective opinion at Norton's biggest competition McAfee, whom only recognise the problem.

Internet Security Systems discribes the problem as:

GameSpy Arcade is a bundler software program that contains advertising-oriented spyware (adware) that is installed when GameSpy Arcade is downloaded on your system, with or without your permission. GameSpy Arcade itself is not spyware or adware, but it does install other pieces of spyware and adware. The bundled adware and spyware can be used to collect browsing session information to send it back to company servers and download and display new advertisements in a popup window while you are browsing the Web.

Their advice is to remove Gamespy if you're not happy with the included advertisement. Weird fact number two: I've never installed Gamespy on my current machine!

A closer examination of the files themselves reveal that the intrusive software has been included in ... an update for games! Conclusion: is nothing safe anymore? Your opinion is of course more than welcome!

I've avoided Gamespy software for years because of what you're talking about here; the disscusion pops up frequently and like they say; there's no smoke without a fire...
And personally I believe that generally (when talking the Internet as a whole) it will get worse before it gets better - if it ever gets better...

Gamespy and all they're affiliates i think are pretty crooked. They make you sign so you can wait in line for downloading which is completely unnecessary and now install adware on to your computer. That should be illegal and i hope they get sued for it. I for one stay clear of IGN.com, fileplanet, gamespy, etc as much as i can but it seems they have a monopoly on some things.
