GeForce 8800 breaking all records
Looking to get a new graphics card this holiday season? Then doubt no longer as the GeForce 8800 series seems to be the ultimate card to get.
Partial conclusion from Anandtech:
I do question the amount of games capable of being played at 2560*1600 and also the amount of people owning a screen that can handle those resolutions.
Also, the fact that such high resolutions are necessary just to show the speed improvement already makes me wonder whether the average consumer/gamer has any use for such fast cards at the moment (not including DirectX10 support of course)
Partial conclusion from Anandtech:
Back when Sony announced the specifications of the PlayStation 3, everyone asked if it meant the end of PC gaming. After all Cell looked very strong and NVIDIA's RSX GPU had tremendous power. We asked NVIDIA how long it would take until we saw a GPU faster than the RSX. Their answer: by the time the PS3 ships. So congratulations to NVIDIA for making the PS3 obsolete before it ever shipped, as G80 is truly a beast.
A single GeForce 8800 GTX is more powerful overall than a 7900 GTX SLI configuration and even NVIDIA's mammoth Quad SLI. Although it's no longer a surprise to see a new generation of GPU outperform the previous generation in SLI, the sheer performance we're able to attain because of G80 is still breathtaking. Being able to run modern day games at 2560x1600 at the highest in-game detail settings completely changes the PC gaming experience. It's an expensive proposition, sure, but it's like no other; games just look so much better on a 30" display at 2560x1600 that it makes playing titles at 1600x1200 seem just "ok". We were less impressed by the hardware itself than by gaming at 2560x1600 with all the quality settings cranked all the way up in every game we tried, and that is saying quite a lot. And in reality, that's what it's all about anyway: delivering quality and performance at levels never before thought possible.

Yea that doesnt make any sense. Just because I have a top of the line laptop doesnt mean that my xbox is garbage. I'm sure the card is great, but it probably costs $300+ too.

Let's just say GPUs need games and games need GPUs, everyone happy?!

PC people will allways want their PCs and console people will allways want their consoles.
Besides that, the games that you get on either format are totaly different with the exception of FPS games, but they are only similar in that are the same genre.
If you want decent Racing games or Beat Em Ups then consoles will win hands down every time but if you want MMORPG or RTS games then a PC is the way to go, as far as FPS games go well that is just down to taste and preference over control method, ie keyboard and mouse or joypad.
Im sure this graphics card is capable of some very impressive jiggery pokery but most big console hitters will never appear on the PC and the ones that do will take an age to get there and vice versa, so IMO neither will kill eachother off.
Atleast probably not in our lifetime.

besides no PC processor can match Cell.

lol. A cheap Cell or custom Xbox gaming processor is not ever going to be a match for the current line of industrial strength CPU's. Simple fact of life. You only get what you pay for.
