Gearbox: Duke demo is important, IP is ours
Gearbox Software's Randy Pitchford is here to make everyone feel good: a demo for the long-awaited Duke Nukem Forever is coming! Well... it's an "important" thing to do.
As seen on the official Duke Nukem website:
“I think that is an important thing to do,” said Pitchford when asked on the possibility of a demo.
“Now that the cat’s out of the bag we can actually make those plans. Now we can get with retailers and figure out the launch window, and figure out demo timing, and work with the first-parties on that.
“We weren’t able to do that until this point, because if we did we risked damaging it even further,” he added.
For the record, Gearbox Software is now not only developing Duke Nukem Forever, they are owner of the entire franchise.“Now that the cat’s out of the bag we can actually make those plans. Pitchford also talked with Gamasutra about how Gearbox got their hands on the IP and seems it wasn't quite the violent fight you might expect:When the paperwork was finished, Dom Perignon was poured and Pitchford, Miller and Broussard each addressed the group. “It was a passing of the torch moment. It wasn’t somber. We were celebrating. Scott was very excited. He’s a businessman and was like ‘I’m finally going to be able to monetize this thing!’ I was watching George – and he has such a personal stake in this – but he was bouncing. What it meant, more than anything else, was his dream wasn’t dead.”
At the time, though, there was still the matter of the legal brawl between 3DR and Take-Two. The next morning, Pitchford was on a plane to California to meet with Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K Games, to tell him of the IP handoff.
“Ultimately, when I acquired the brand, I acquired the liability. I was now the person having to defend the lawsuit with Take-Two. Fortunately, we have a good relationship with Take-Two and they got behind it. … I was able to help clear the drama away... where we’re at now is a drama free world, where everyone is focused on making it work.”
