GoW: 1 million times sold, trilogy in the making?

Gears of War, the third person shooter with the most embarassing TV game commercial ever, has sold over 1 million copies on the Xbox360.

That's just two weeks after its release which makes it the fastest-selling game on the Xbox360 console (faster than Ghost Recon 3 and Call of Duty 2). More than 850.000 gamers have been ripping each other apart in 10 million gameplay sessions. Also, Xbox Live Gold subscriptions increased over 50 percent since GoW's release.

CliffyB, Epic and Microsoft can be happy but might want to squeeze more out of the franchise by creating a trilogy, or so MS marketing head honcho Jeff Bell said in a Gamedaily-interview, discussing the horrid ad for the game:

"Gamers today demand an excellent story in their games; they need to know what's at stake, and why they should care. Excitement tops the list of desired emotions, but they want to be scared, too. They want the rush that comes from being scared by an enemy or trapped in a dark room and escaping with their lives. The goal of this ad is to establish Marcus Fenix as the hero of the Gears of War trilogy. The intention is to create emotional connection with him that is lacking in typical third-person action title marketing, by communicating a sense of desperation, loneliness, overwhelming odds, and the ultimate futility of the situation he faces."

Note: Although Gears designer Cliff Bleszinski has hinted multiple times that he would like to make Gears into a trilogy, Bell's comment appears to be confirmation.

Seems like a certainty that at least a sequel is underway.

I am hoping more for a prequel which will cover the events leading up to emergency day. Story was very weak in Gears of War, I wish they would take more time to explain the background of the characters and the universe.

Agree with Parallax...

What was wrong with the advert, am I to believe the advert that is getting bad press is the "Mad World" song in the background, if so... I thought that was a great advert, better than seeing the same old "loud and in-your-face attitude" that these games always use...

Would have to agree with that, the story is non existent and i would of liked to of seen emergence day properly.

DONT READ THIS IF YOU HAVENT FINISHED GOW.

Unfortunatly like the female voice of the Locust's says at the end, we dont know why they really emerged and we think we have won the war but we are obviously wrong, so there is blatantly going to be a sequel which we are going to have to wait an age for but hopefully it will give us more of a story and some explanations behind the Locust Horde.

YOU CAN CARRY ON READING NOW.

I think the TV ad is awesome and the music goes with it perfectly, plus its all in game engine and no fancy pre-rendered bull and no stupid live video just to make a cool looking ad.

Everytime i see an add for a game i allways think, just show the game running and nothing else.

I think about a quarter of the games played online have been me and my mates as we havent stopped playing it since monday, the tuesday that i got it i played from 10am until 5am wednesday morning, i havent done that since Halo 2 launched.

Isn't that exactly what GoW stands for? Didn't like the ad one bit, the contrast between the music and what the game really stands for is too big.

What Anonymous was referring to was the music used, which conveys the theme of destroyed beauty, ie. the world you are fighting in. This fits great to this game, as opposed to every standard game-trailer you see with some rock music hauling ass or some disco music pumping, which does not fit the mood of most games at all. Also, if you have played Gears of War, you know that is uses a high-quality soundtrack consisting of a lot of classic-based music.

And how would the trailer relate to in-game? How many times have you died in Gears of War just because you were looking around at the awesome graphics and environment?

I don't think we'll have to wait long for a sequel.
Epic aren't likely to just use their baby (UE3) once for gears and then start from scratch, i think we're more likely to see episodes released, much like half life two is.
So we'll probably get full game expansions and the like early next year.

Yeah, go sign up man, it would be cool to see a new face here :)

Epic is now focusing on finishing Unreal Tournament 2007, which is another UE3 title. I don't think we will ever see episodic games from Epic, they just aren't the kind to do it. Remember, we are talking about a company that have licensed their engine to just about the whole world (last one was NASA!), and they always give out free bonus packs and content for their games. I think they are far off from the desperate point of having to come up with episodic games in order to get cash in faster.
