Goodbye HD-DVD!

Posted on Tuesday, 19 February 2008 by Devilke, source: EG
After a few days of rumours and speculations, Toshiba has officially announced today that they're stopping the production of HD-DVD.

The decision was made during a management meeting in Japan today. The reason given is 'major changes in the market'. Think of all the film studios that are choosing for Blu-Ray.

"We carefully assessed the long-term impact of continuing the so-called 'next-generation format war' and concluded that a swift decision will best help the market develop," said Atsutoshi Nishida, big boss at Toshiba.

"While we are disappointed for the company and more importantly, for the consumer, the real mass market opportunity for high definition content remains untapped and Toshiba is both able and determined to use our talent, technology and intellectual property to make digital convergence a reality."
Toshiba is disappointed but realises this is the best and most honest decision for the market. Moreover, there wasn't really a lot of choice left. They are now going to focus on supporting the High Definition content in another way, for example by improving flash memory and hard disc.

Toshiba promises to continue the support for already existing and sold products. However, there won't be any new devices available by the end of March. The relation with Microsoft will continue but it's not clear yet how. It's not known yet what Microsoft will do now but the company said a while ago that it's not ruled out they would support Blu-Ray in the future.

The question is whether this will stimulate the sales of the PS3. The Blu-Ray drive was already one of the most important reasons for buying a Sony console.
