"Google to buy Valve"

Hostile takeover!
The Inquirer had 'well placed sources' confirm that Google will take over Valve in the very near future.
Although Google does not seem interested in becoming a game developer, they are very much interested in on-line content delivery and Valve happens to have the most popular software distribution tool in the (gaming) world: Steam.
Even though The Inquirer has a habit of generating a blistering fire where there is absolutely no smoke, one can't help but wonder how this would affect the PC gaming world and that other company that usually competes on anything with Google, Microsoft.

Google's main competitor, the arch enemy, is Microsoft and Microsoft has a game developing studio so naturally Google must have one too...they've just gotten their own browser and in the end they will probably launch an OS of some sort, at least that's gotta be their ultimate goal way out in the future...buying up Valve is yet another step in that process.

in my opinion it would be a very hard blow... With Valve they would obtain some strong IP's (portal, halflife), steam, steamworks, steam publishing and... source. Instead of building their way up from the ground they would immediately be put on the gaming map as a trend setting developer, licensor, publisher and distributor. Not a bad move if you ask me.

A very hard blow indeed, and a very good move from a company strategy POV and Google should have the money needed to purchase Valve!
Bet you Steve Ballmer will be wrecking his office again if this comes true :) It's war between Google and M$ and this move would most likely really benefit Google, provided they can handle running Valve properly but I guess that's more a question of headhunting the right people for the job which is one of Google's true forces.
