Gran Turismo to be sold without cars?

Posted on Thursday, 21 September 2006 by Speed, source: Beyond3D
Beyond3D has translated a Famitsu interview with Kazunori Yamauchi who talked about the upcoming Gran Turismo for the PS3 and it seems there will be two versions available: one with and one without cars

+ Gran Turismo HD: Classic is what adopts the GT:HD playable demo at E3 and meant to showcase the online aspect. A race is done with about 20 cars. Apparently this part starts with no cars or courses. You download a car for 50 - 100 yen (0.43 - 0.85$) and a course for 200 - 500 yen (1.71 - 4.26$). Over 750 cars and 50 tracks are available for purchase. Users can define race events freely and can hold online race events by themselves.

Not all cars will be available at launch so even if you were to buy the premium package you'll be buying new ones later one through micropayments.

In all seriousness, this may very well be a pretty decent tactic. You buy the tracks and cars you like, and ditch the rest. Just have to see how pricing stacks up against each other.

1 car = 50-100 yen
750 cars available
750 cars = 37500-75000 yen

37500 yen = $320/£170
75000 yen = $635/£340

1 course = 200-500 yen
50 courses available
50 courses = 10000-25000 yen

10000 yen = $85/£45
25000 yen = $215/£115

So to own the whole lot, cars and course, will cost somewhere between...
$405 - $850
£215 - £455

Theres a quick run down (hope my maths is still up to scratch :P)

Hmmm... thats just... silly.

I'm curious. It's a recent trend, and it's probably not all bad, but for sometihng like this, on a scale like that, nah, it's just stupid.

Just to compare this with the old game is quite funny...

GT4 has 721 cars (in PAL version) and 51 tracks.
The newest GT will have roughly the same IF you buy them all.

How can they justify having to pay roughly £400/$750 more...

or how can they justify making people people pay as much as that in any circumstances... I would personally expect the game to come with a "car seat" and steering wheel to play it. And both being made out of leather...

Plus I would expect nothing but ultra realisitic graphics :P

I personally do not like this new trend that games are going buy (buy additional features), we pay for the FULL game, not parts of it.

it started mainly with Oblivion, then every console took the idea, and now it is becoming too common... =/

You can just buy the full version. Then if you want to you can buy additional cars and tracks after release. Why are people so stupid? :P

Well there's the FREE ONLINE SERVICE you have all mentioned so many times in the past.

I know its only one game but its surely a sign of things to come and if big titles like GT are going to charge you left right and centre then you can be sure that little third party companys will be charging you aswell.

Just make the game as normal and give us all the cars and tracks, how much hassle is it going to be trying to race people online if we all have different tracks, hence you will have no choice but to buy all the tracks so you will never have that problem.
