Greenpeace doesn't like Nintendo

Posted on Friday, 28 November 2008 by Speed, source: Edge-Online
Nintendo seems to feel that the environment isn't their problem.

Greenpeace has said in an interview that Sony is quite far ahead of Microsoft and Nintendo when it comes to being aware of the environment and stopping pollution. Microsoft seems to be improving their situation but Nintendo is just a sad company when it comes to being "green".

“Nintendo does have a target to cut absolute emissions by 2 percent each year, but they themselves said they didn’t meet that, and I understand that their emissions actually increased by 6 percent when their sales began to shoot up in 2007.”

What Greenpeace do know about Nintendo is hardly flattering. Kruszewska explains that the company has no take-back policies anywhere in the world except where legislation demands it (take-back being the policy where consumers can discard their old, unwanted or faulty products by returning them to the company through retailers or other collection points.)

“What really struck me was Nintendo’s response when we asked them about this,” says Kruszewska. “They said that their products don’t create waste because… people hang onto them! It’s a very inadequate response, and I’m surprised a serious company like Nintendo would even respond that way.”
Nintendo products don't create waste as "people hang onto them". What a fantastic answer! Can a company be more out of touch with reality?

Nintendo is right - their products are very robust and last virtually forever. I still have an old NES box that just needs a bit of cleaning on the cartridge leads from time to time to make it workable. Even the old stuff is pretty popular, and tends to get used for years. And the units that they do make don't have nasty pollutants that would make disposal a problem (say, as exists with old CRT monitors).

I think this is a non-issue. Nintendo is a good company.

Er just taking in numbers but the original NES sold what over 57 million units, do you honestly think all those people kept them or binned them. It's the same for any company that makes a item. It may last but most of it will end up in the trash for something newer or better.

Less of the fan boyness there and a bit more thinking ;)
