HD Battle: Universal can switch any time
Variety has received confirmation that Universal's deal to back HD-DVD exclusively has ended. However, that doesn't mean the company will start working with Blu-ray right away, only that it can if it wants to.
So it seems that the backing of Toshiba's HD-DVD format isn't as strong anymore as they lead to believe. Universal can switch any time they want, and Paramount has an escape clause to get out of their exclusivity deal.

Should Toshiba concede defeat on the format, the decision to drop HD DVD would be made for both studios. But Toshiba doesn't appear ready to do that. At the Consumer Electronics Show, the manufacturer reaffirmed its commitment to the format, noting strong sales during the fourth quarter and indicating it would continue marketing its hardware through 2008.
