HD-DVD just got bigger

Posted on Tuesday, 11 September 2007 by Speed, source: ScreenDigest
Remember that everyone said that Blu-ray was the better format because it had more capacity than HD-DVD? Well, here you can read that the DVD Standards authority has just accepted a new HD-DVD disc format that allows up to 51GB of data. The discs are fully compatible with all older HD-DVD players so early adopters shouldn't worry about compatibility issues (unlike with Blu-ray)

Meanwhile, the Blu-ray camp seems to be losing support. After Paramount announced their devotion to HD-DVD, Audioholics is reporting that various studios are releasing their so-called Blu-ray exclusive titles on HD-DVD through various subsidiaries

Much of what Collins says is similar to what Paramount/Dreamworks Animation has officially said, and incidentally, similar to what a number of other industry insiders have said regarding the costs of manufacturing Blu-ray vs. HD DVD: Blu-ray is expensive to manufacture.

What is even more interesting is that Mr. Collins provides links to several web sites, such as Amazon.co.uk, that sell movies on HD DVD, movies that supposedly should only be available on BD because of studio exclusive format deals. At least according to what we are told in the US by the BD (sic) only studios.

Guess one could call this bad news for Blu-ray (and Sony as well of course, being the biggest Blu-ray supporter)

and china adopted CH DVD as the national standard for HD. It's compatible with HD DVD, just has some added chinese anti piracy soft, but this means the chinese players are good for HD DVD too.
So prepare for that sub 200€ player

That's the 3-layer HD DVD I suppose?

Won't take long before Sony will release their 4-layer BD's then (100GB).

hehe a 100gb disc at 40ish mb/sec that would give about 49% of the disc that goes unused on a regular movie, they can start putting whole series on one disc soon

Yeah, especially when you know 8-layer BD's (200GB) are also possible.

100gb is just overkill for most consumer products.

Vaporware is something that's supposed to have come out but didn't. The new HD-DVD standard has just been accepted so it can't be counted as vaporware.

Won't take long before Sony will release their 4-layer BD's then (100GB).

I would think they first settle their standard ;)
