HL2 activation

Posted on Tuesday, 2 September 2003 by Speed, source: Fragland
Nerdsahoy had an interview with Gabe Newell in which he mentioning that Half-Life 2 will have some form of product activation key as copy security
We've implemented a system very similar to Windows Product Activation, which prevents you from installing the same copy of Windows on more than one PC. In our case, it allows one copy of HL2 per machine. This will hold true for those who purchase it over Steam, and those who buy it in a box at the store. You can activate your copy over the Internet, or by mailing in the activation card that will come with the game. Steam users will obviously have their game activated over the Internet.
I hope not everyone will start using such technology as I find it to be irritating as hell (although I do understand the need for copy protection)

Steam is the auto-update system from Valve. They use it to distribute patches, maps, etc...

pfff, another one of those annoying 'anti-copy' crap :(

the system will be hacked anyway for the warezzz people

what if your HD crashes or you buy a new machine or you are stuck without internet ?

if I buy a game I want to put in the cd, install and play with no extra hassle
