Half Life: Blue Shift released for free

Posted on Thursday, 25 August 2005 by Rav^, source: Steam News
Almost a week ago, we announced that the second expansion pack for the original Half-Life, Blue Shift, was going to be given out for free. The retail expansion was originally released in 2001 and developed by Gearbox Software. The unique element was to be able to play as Barney Calhoun, the security agent Gordon Freeman meets in the beginning of the original game.

Yesterday, Valve announced that the expansion is now available for free through their electronic distribution platform Steam, but there is a small catch. You can only download it if you own the Half-Life Premier Pack, the Half-Life 2 Silver package, or the Half-Life 2 Gold package.

So this is not blue shift 2? Why the hell release software which is 10 years old? Do you see anyone playing DOOM2 encore?

They should have made this for the Source engine, like they are doing with Day of Defeat and Half-Life1.

"You can only download it if you own the the HL Premier Pack, HL2 Silver or Gold package" - I see that the word "free" is still interpreted differently in this world.

HL1 looked rubbish with the Source engine though, as they didn't bother to upgrade the textures. It looked only marginally better than the original. It was hardly HL2 graphics, not even remotely close.

Yep, it is one of the best single player games. If you missed that period in the gaming history, you missed something big. But of course, if you play it today, it's not the same because of the graphics.
