Halo movie director is...
... Neill Blomkamp, a rather unknown name in the Hollywood movie world since he only has previous experience with commercials and shorts.
Microsoft trusts that his debut will rock box offices though, also because the South African director has won several awards with his work so it doesn't seem like a complete gamble at all.
The worldwide release of the Halo flick will take place in the summer of 2008. Peter Jackson is still involved in the production process and filming will take place in New Zealand.
Here's what Jackson has to say:

With Neill on board, I'm even more excited by the potential of this project."
