Hellgate: London dev in trouble? *Update*

Posted on Saturday, 12 July 2008 by Speed, source: Gamasutra
Update: VE3D is reporting that Flagship Studios has shut down and all employees were let go:

Flagships's Community Manager, Taylor Balbi, has revealed, through sources, that all Ping0 and Flagship Studios staff have been made redundant. Employees were notified at a company meeting and subsequently informed that the offices will be officially closed on Saturday. Balbi went on to reveal that three of the studio's top brass dug into their own pockets to provide 30 days of pay to all employees.
The intellectual property of Hellgate: London is now owned by Comerica thanks to a loan agreement with Flagship Studios. The other game the studio was working on, Mythos is now in the hands of Hanbitsoft thanks to a similar loan.

Not so long ago we reported that Flagship Studios was having problems keeping their talented people on board but it now seems that things have turned for the worse: confirmation has been given that the company is actively firing people.

This morning, Gamasutra obtained information from a source close to the company indicating that staff at both the Flagship development team as well as online services subsidiary Ping0 were let go. Both companies operate out of the same building.

Flagship declined to go into further detail about the layoffs, beyond stating that there was truth to the reports.
Meanwhile HellgateGuru is reporting that a Korean news report stated that the local publisher in the region will be taking over the intellectual property for the game and intends to continue the game using in-house staff.

Flagship Studios has immediately responded to the rumour stating it's a blatant lie:

'This story is an outright lie. We have no idea where they are getting their information from and have asked legal counsel to pursue the issue. We are mystified by Hanbitsoft's conclusions and any attempt to take over the IP will be met with a strong and swift response, to 'illegally take over the IP'. All right title and interest in Hellgate; London resides in Flagship Financing, LLC a wholly-owned subsidiary of Flagship Studios. We are outraged that Hanbitsoft would attempt to completely tarnish the reputation of its most vital developer. Hanbitsoft's new management clearly does not understand the terms of its relationship with Flagship

So... when they initially called hanbitsoft a bunch of filthy liars they were actually telling the truth. They might not have gotten Hellgate, but they took over another IP.
