History of Portable Gaming

Posted on Monday, 6 October 2003 by Speed, source: Fragland
Aaah, those were the days when we had our Nintendo portable game on which we could play Donkey Kong... Boomtown has posted part one of their series on the history of portable gaming
Nintendo released the Game Boy in 1989, but in fact, it was possible to play Nintendo games on handhelds long before this. Do you remember? Or are you perhaps too young? In any case, I’m referring to Game & Watch, Nintendo’s famous line of simple portable LCD video games, created by the late Gunpei Yokoi, one of Nintendo’s greatest designers.

Game & Watch featured simple LCD screens with predefined backgrounds and “moving” LCD characters. A number of soon to be famous Nintendo characters made their first “console” appearances here, including Donkey Kong, and everybody’s favourite plumber Mario, who were fast becoming popular on Nintendo’s arcade machines everywhere.
Note that these Game&Watch handhelds are now worth lots of bucks if you've got a working one...

Seriously? I still have Donkey Kong and Donkey Kong 2 somewhere. They should be fully working but probably need new batteries.
