How Rockstar fucked us all

Posted on Wednesday, 27 July 2005 by Speed, source: CheapAssGamers
Over at Cheapassgamers is a rather unconventional column where the author writes that Rockstar has done a terrible job for the games industry and that by adding the Hot Coffee content, they've actually screwed us all.

This quote nicely sums it up :

With tag-teaming NY Senators leading the way, politicians all over the country are jumping on the “video games are ruining society” bandwagon. Given this current frenzy, you would have thought Rockstar would have handled the Grand Theft Auto Hot Coffee controversy with the utmost care.

Instead, Rockstar sold out their colleagues and their customers, leaving the entire gaming industry and the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) looking like a bunch of high school slackers who got caught smoking in the bathroom.

The guy sure has a point...

You can blame them but be sure not to forget the ESRB themselves. The 'shocking' scene didn't justify that higher rating at all. They were clearly afraid to take it up against Clinton/Thompson & co.

The whole case got political when politicians saw a chance to score some cheap points to improve their own situation...as usual...

In the grand scheme of things, I fail to see the significance of this whole episode. It has truly been blown out of all proportion in every which way. It would have gone unnoticed and unmentioned if these right wing head up their own ass politicians hadn't decided to weigh in with their ill thought opinions. I don't know what's more disturbing; the fact that it has been allowed to get this far in the first place, or that these people actually believe they are involved in a worthwhile and important issue.

I think GTA:SA is the single best game ever produced, it's funny, it's serious, it laughs with society, and every single decent grown up out there will agree with me. That sex mini-game should've been IN the game, it should've got an adult rating.

If wallmart had not sold it, it's their choice. Don't be aming your criticism at Rockstar, aim it at unresponsable parents, people that are too radical about protecting and hiding away their kids for the real world.

My parents never told me to stay away from any movie, song, tv show, ... and I turned out pretty OK, I think. Only by censorship you create more ignorant people.

Rockstaar created a work of art, as far as I'm concerned.

I agree with the above, except that SA, afaik, was just an upgrade from Vice City, and basically used mroe or less the same engines with a number of tweaks.

I think the matter is more towards Rockstar at first claiming that the content wasn't there while it wasn't. They should never have lied...

Indeed, Rockstar just lied, both to ESBR and to customers, about the content, pretending it never was in the game code. And that is really stupid. Sooner or later, it will have been discovered.
Yeah, piliticians are 'going too far', but it would have been smarter for Rockstar to admit the hot-coffee mod directly.

Quite why they lied is beyond me. Surely anyone with an ounce of sense at the company would have known the truth would have been discovered. Must have been a decision made by the big boss, who maybe didn't actually know the truth himself, or was lied to by a subordinate. The idea that they knowingly lied and expected to get away with it is unfathomable.

yeah, Its ok when a 12 year old can go on rampages, killing people at random, Blowing up cars, beating up the elderly and finally to cap it all off, pick up a postuite and run her over with your car to get your money back.

But as soon as a "sex" comes into play, it surely isnt good for him to do that. It could morph his mind.

Of course its ok in the US since they need kids with the killing mentality from an early age so they will be ready to join the army :)
