How Sony will counter Xbox Live! *UPDATED*
Update: Sony has told 1Up that they are in talks with Viacom and Xfire concernign one specific PS3 title but apparently this deal will be seperate from Sony's Network Platform
Original Story:
Let's just say things how they are: the online capabilities of the PS2 didn't even come near those of the Xbox and with the X360 and the updated Xbox Live! service, Microsoft has upped the ladder even more.
So, Sony needs to do something spectacular for the PS3 if they want to proove that they too can stand their man in the online console gaming world. And how will they do that?
With Xfire!
By integrating an existing service into their own Playstation Network Platform they hope - thanks to the experience and current possibilities of Xfire - to take back ground on Microsoft quickly.
Neither company wanted to comment on the disclosure that was found in the financial report by Viacom but they didn't deny it either. However, with the PS3-exclusive title Untold Legends: Dark Kingdom being in the list of supported games for the Xfire client they really don't need to.
There are no further details but you can speculate about there being a friend tracker, the possibility to join a game that your friends are playing, a server browser so you can choose on which server to play, an in-game voice chat and of course patches and probably a profile with statistics attached to it, all just like Xfire is already offering to PC gamers.
Of course all this is pure speculation as we're waiting on some official word from Sony on the matter
Mike Cassidy, CEO of Xfire spoke with 1UP to clarify the company's position on our report and the Viacom Q2 statements: "Xfire is not part of the PlayStation Network Platform. We are in discussions with Sony Online Entertainment, but I cannot comment any further."

In a transcript of Viacom's Q2 earning's report conference call a deal between Sony and Xfire was revealed:
Importantly, Xfire just signed a deal with Sony to create a version of their platform for the new PS3, which will now enable Xfire to extend its reach further into the huge console gaming market.
