ID Soft on magazines & websites
German fansite Doom3maps.de has received a mail from ID Software's Todd Hollenshead where he explains how ID Software sees the work of magazines and websites
This time around, and for this specific opportunity, we went with magazine coverage because we believed that was the best way to get the latest information out to our fans in an impartial and unbiased way. If a magazine is going to spend much ink, page space, and especially a cover devoted to a game, they want to make sure, as best as they can, that someone else doesn't "scoop" them and ruin their treat for their readers by publishing everything first. That's fair because the magazine spends time and money to send a writer to our office, work with us on the cover, devotes resources to making the story good, etc. This isn't just DOOM 3, but every game in every magazine is treated the same way.
I see his point and can go along with him for some extent but the thing is that websites will always have a bigger impact than magazines as the whole world can check them while magazines still have a limited user base of subscribers. Hell, even the smallest site will get thousands of visitors if they've got a scoop on Doom 3 while a magazine will remain with its fairly small amount of readers which only moderately will be increased temporarily by a scoop. In other news:

Also, I don't think a magazine's userbase fluctuates because of scoops (unlike sites). More likely, there's a steady, loyal following because of the writing style and overall reviewing quality.
