In-game ads in Counter-Strike: Source

Posted on Monday, 14 May 2007 by FroFro, source: Eurogamer
You probably all remember the commotion there was when EA announced they would publish in-game commercials in Battlefield 2142 (I have yet to see them though). Now Valve is doing the same, by announcing to do marketing in their game Counter-Strike Source.

"We know from research that gamers crave real world brands as part of the game experience."

Apparently they think gamers like having commercials in-game, finding it a more realistic experience. The first item to be promoted will be the Smokin' Aces DVD.

If you've already paid for a game I don't understand why the hell they have to advertise. I would understand if advertising in some games would replace the retail fee, but it doesn't!

This is true, we should almost be getting paid to allow commercials in our games. Research shows gamers crave real world brands as part of the game experience? Last time in Middle Eastern Settings I don't think giant posters of Smokin' Aces' DVDs are plastered on brick walls. I don't like games in advertisement as I think it paves the way for companies to push ads in other places you may not yet expect.

Imagine a 30 second ad playing everytime you flush your toilet. Fuck that.
