Infinity Ward takes back Call of Duty *updated*
Update:
Eurogamer received word from Activision that the story below is not correct and that Treyarch and Infinity Ward will continue to switch making CoD-games.
Original Story:
Next-Gen is reporting that original Call of Duty development studio Infinity Ward has renegotiated their contract with Activision and have managed to get exclusivity again on the famous FPS series.
Activision's strategy to release a new Call of Duty on annual basis, switching every year between studios will therefore no longer apply. Apparently this is also one of the reasons why the publisher decided to close down its Underground Development studio. It seems those guys were working on - next to a port of Quake Wars - a new Call of Duty game that wouldn't be a first person shooter but instead and new third person action adventure spin-off that was supposed to become another yearly franchise.

A spokesperson for the publisher told Eurogamer it was a total fabrication, and that Treyarch and Infinity Ward would still alternately create instalments in the shooter series.

Next-Gen is reporting that original Call of Duty development studio Infinity Ward has renegotiated their contract with Activision and have managed to get exclusivity again on the famous FPS series.
Next-Gen learned from an ex-Activision Underground employee on Monday that Infinity Ward, developer of November's CoD4, recently prompted a renegotiation of its contract with parent Activision so that the studio would be the sole developer of the FPS series.
As soon as Call of Duty 5 (created by Treyarch) hits the streets, Infinity Ward will be the sole studio that will be making anything CoD-related from that moment on.Activision's strategy to release a new Call of Duty on annual basis, switching every year between studios will therefore no longer apply. But the new CoD game wasn't going to be an FPS like previous franchise entries, rather a third-person action adventure game spin-off that would also become a yearly franchise on top of the original FPS-style series. That way, Activision would be able to potentially release two CoD titles per year.
Somehow it's good to see the milking stop. When looking at the entire Call of Duty series, one can't but say that the Infinity Ward games clearly were of better quality than the others. In other news:

I think Grey Matter had a way better take on the Multiplayer experience than IW. CoDUO mp was awesome. Lots of gametypes, large and small maps, vehicles. They didn't just rehash the same game over and over. They made something new.
Not really, most of the content was actually used from CoD1, hence it was an expansion pack not a new game. Th eonly new things they brought were vehicles, the odd gametype and vehicle sized maps. Although people like vehicular combat, most of the CoD1 population did not.
If only Infinity Ward were to remake CoD1 with updated graphics, they would then have a winner...
