Intel demonstrates ETQW with Ray Tracing

Posted on Wednesday, 18 June 2008 by Herrdidi, source: TG Daily
Until some time ago Intel used adjusted versions of Quake 3 and 4 in their demos, but now the company has presented a demonstration of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars which uses Ray Tracing technology to produce standard HD resolution (1280x720).

The thing that makes Ray Tracing so special is the "new" form of rendering in games. The technology has already been used for several years during construction of professional 3D-images as it literally calculates beams of light and breaks them in a realistic manner.

A small detail however is that this technique is much more intense than what average GPU's and processors are capable of. The demo was rendered on a 16-core system at about 2.93GHz...

Images of the little experiment can be found here, at TG Daily.

It might be worth noting that Intel is the leader in the world of graphics chipsets (yea, not nVidia or ATI/AMD and that thanks to crappy low-budget pc's) and that they see raytracing as the future of graphics.
