Intel officially launched Core i7, flexes muscles

Even though already available for quite some time now (read a week or so), Intel decided to officially launch the successor to the Core2Duo platform which was the start of their way back to the gaming platform top.

Thing is, although the Core i7 really trashes the competition and its own predecessors in desktop applications, raw processing power, consumption and heat generation not everything is a landslide win.

Techspot's benchmarks, which have never let me down before, show that there are only big differences in game benchmarks when playing on low quality settings. In high quality settings, the Core i7 920, the lowest priced processors that is available right now in the high end segment, is beaten by current Core2Duo processors. Because of the major win in lower quality settings one might blame the GPU for causing a bottleneck but i'm sure there is room for improvement there without needing to dish out an additional €500 for a kick ass graphics card too.

These are the European target prices from a local distributor (so you might want to add some additional Euro's to that):
  • CORE i7 920 €270
  • CORE i7 940 €550
  • CORE i7 Extreme 965 €950

This new i7 platform is gonna take us back to the times where it'll cost you $2,000-$4,000 to build a new gaming rig...don't really feel like going back to those times, it's expensive enough already...that aside the i7 owns! But at a price...

I feel AMD is gonna step in on this round. i7 and all it's hype, coupled with it not showing the improvements like buddy above said, if AMD has something up their sleves, ima be one happy camper.

AMD is having financial issues. I wouldn't expect them to do anything major at the moment...

AMD should be back in 2009 with the 45nm desktop cores. Also, don't let these intel prices fool you, those are totally high end. Mainstream will arrive Q1 2009

AMD will have some advantages, like their new 45nm Deneb core based CPUs will support both DDR2 and DDR3 RAM so that, like in my case, can upgrade my current Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Black Edition with 4x1 GB DDR2 RAM to one of the new 45nm quad-cores and some DDR3 RAM after a quick BIOS update of my MSI motherboard. This new quad-core should be able to overclock to 4GHz on air-cooling easily and that'll save me a bundle compared to if I went and built a new i7 based gaming rig!
It wouldn't be able to beat the i7 platform based rig I could have built but I don't need THE best, I just need sufficient performance at a reasonable price cause I'll have to upgrade again "tomorrow" and the day after that, and the day after day, and so on and so forth!
