Latest update in the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD battle

Posted on Monday, 28 January 2008 by Desertwolf, source: GameSpot
Once again a heavy blow has been dealt to Toshiba's HD-DVD format. This time it's not the movies industry but the British high street chain Woolworths dropping the axe. Woolworths will stop selling HD-DVD's in their shops in March, although customers will still be able to buy them from their Web Store.

This decision was made after Blu-Ray sales outnumbered HD-DVD sales by ten to one during the past Christmas period. Hi-def movies' growing popularity becomes obvious when one takes a look at their sales: an average increase in sales of 40% has been noted by Woolworths.

According to Steven McGunigel Sony's Playstation3 can be thanked for the succes of Blu-Ray dvd's.
Sales figures clearly show that the market is moving towards one format of high definition DVD. The main reason is the success of Sony's PS3 machine. Because it plays Blu-ray discs, there are over 750,000 homes in the UK that can view the new high definition format. There is nowhere near that number of HD DVD players around.

Just bought the PS3 a month ago after much consideration, because I thought Blu-ray has more potential than HD-DVD. One reason was our local Blockbuster video store rents only Blu-rays in the high-def section. Looks like I made the right choice!!!

Woolworth's have a terrible film selection. No one buys films there anymore, i passed my local store the other day and checked their stock and it was dire. For that matter i didn't see any bluray there either. This is more a matter of woolworths getting free advertising online in this debate. When was the last time anyone bought a film there? When play.com drop HD then i'd consider it dead, a great site for watching sales tbh. Oddly enough in this whole 'war', a sony bravia w series and a Toshiba player are a great combo, for upgrading too. This is jsut more viral campaigning, worthless information tbh.
