Layoff soap 2009, next up: Disney
Ever since some banks decided to go bankrupt or come up lacking billions of euros and dollars it seems that every company has gone into some crazy panicky or paranoia mode by firing people, consolidation different division or even closing entire departments down. And as it is usually the case, industries that tend to get bigger than they can in fact support are hit very hard.
The gaming industry has been without a doubt one of the most booming of the last few years and that attracts a certain amount of business that is meant to bring in quick cash instead of giving priority to quality. Now it seems that companies who have given into this are the first ones to suffer.
It's no wonder then that Disney Interactive is downsizing Propaganda Games, creator of the latest Turok which couldn't deliver on the high expectations. One critical point that was often mentioned was the fact that, although pretty, the game was about the same as it had always been. Averaging out at a reasonable 6.9 at Metacritic, it still tanked at retail.
About 30 people will be let go and I doubt we will ever see the much rumoured but never really announced Turok 2.
Kotaku reports that the sequel is indeed cancelled and that Disney is also looking at consolidating other studios resulting in even more layoffs.
