Lionhead: X360 used games more of a problem than PC piracy
Reality check: piracy and second hand sales don't COST publishers anything!
Lionhead Studios Fable 3 lead combat designer Mike West has said in an interview that these days used game sales on Xbox360 are more of a money drain for companies than PC Piracy.
Piracy is illegal, yes. But does it hurt sales? Not as much as some publishers would want us to believe as not everyone who pirates a game would actually go out and buy it if they couldn't pirate it.
Used game sales on the other hand are a different matter. People use retail stores for ease to sell their used games and buy new games with the money they get from old ones. It's a service the shop gives, and they ask a little money for it. And that's what's bad in the eyes of game publishers. They're not getting any of that money, eventhough they originally created the product that gets sold for a second time. And we're supposed to agree with that stance?
Well, I for one do not. I feel it's an idiotic accountant point of view that's unfortunately getting more and more widely adopted and is 100% fueled by greed. And unlike Gordon Gekko in the original Wall Street, I say "Greed is NOT good!". It's what got us in the biggest economic crisis ever.

"Piracy these days on PC is probably less problematic than second-hand sales on the Xbox,"
"For us it's probably a no-lose even with piracy as it is," shrugged West. "But, as I say, second-hand sales cost us more in the long-run than piracy these days."
To be honest, I find this a typical statement of greed that roams around these days."For us it's probably a no-lose even with piracy as it is," shrugged West. "But, as I say, second-hand sales cost us more in the long-run than piracy these days."

And obviously it's not only a bad thing. People are more likely to buy games quickly after the release (when they are most expensive), if they think they can sell them later on.
