Major EVE Online scandal out in the open *Updated*

Posted on Thursday, 8 February 2007 by Speed, source: EVE Online Forums
Update: CCP Games have locked the specific thread and stated that they will soon give answers concerning the issues raised.

Here's the official quote from CCP:

I am closing the thread to further discussion. It was my hope that the replies to the original statement would remain on topic, but due to the lack of clarity in that statement this was not the case.

To those that are saying, "CCP will sweep this under the rug and not offer further comment", you are incorrect. More information and answers will be posted before the start of the weekend.

In the interim, please do not open new threads about this topic. Members of the EVE community will have an opportunity to voice their opinions and comments shortly.

Thanks Borgholio for notifying us

Original Story: Over at the EVE Online forums is a huge thread where allegations are posted about improprieties by CCP staff.

Apparently, several of CCP's staff are playing the game themselves and although that as such isn't a bad thing, it appears that some of them have given assistance to several major alliances in-game.

Here's a quote from one of the players:

The concern being talked about by the vast majority of players is not the identity of certain Dev or GM players, nor is it an in-game event that occured many months ago. The concern is that Band of Brothers (and possibly other large alliances) have received ill-gotten assistance from the Developers or GMs in the form of blueprints, ships, etc. That was the biggest concern, and you made absolutely no mention of it at all. Nobody really cares about the identity of CCP players in player alliances. Nobody really cares about an event that took place months ago. People care about rampant cheating by those whose job it is to STOP cheating. By conveniently ignoring this issue, you are only reinforcing the belief that CCP has something to hide.

Were you to come out and say "Yes, some of our Devs and GMs were cheating. We cannot release their names for privacy reasons, but we can tell you that they've been fired, and all ill-gotten assets have been removed from the game.", then the community would be happy. It would suck that CCP employees have (yet again) been caught cheating, but at least we would know that you're doing something about it. Or you could have said "In regards to the cheating issue, we can't find any evidence of this whatsoever.". That wouldn't make people as happy, but at least you would acknowledge it. Instead, you whitewash it. You really screwed up, CCP. We want clear, straightforward answers, and we want them now.

CCP Games have started an investigation and have stated to publish the results of that soon.

Whats worse is that one of the developers that was in BoB created the T2 BPO lottery. This is the same dev that left 10 BPOs for BoB when he was forced to have his character renamed (not deleted! liars!).

That is fucked up.

well i see people saying things but still not even posting who they are. in game my name is Dolly Parton and I really like the game. i am glad to hear devs are playing the game cause that will help find bugs and other issues yoou just can't simulate with 30k+ online. once all the truth comes out i hope those who are cheating to be eliminated and dealt with accordingly. if they are proven innocent i hope they can be pardon of all here say. in time the truth will come out and everyone will be happy.

PS

doesn't everyone know this is a game and not the local government. yes its still wrong, cheating is wrong and lying to cover it up would be even worse but hey, go some where else and play another game if you like, just PLEASE GIVE ME YOUR STUFF WHEN YOU DO.

even though its a game, but its a product, and 80% of the worldwide product providers are all crazed about quality of service, completely spoiling us on what to expect, such as a CCP employee being fired for cheating in a game and helping a select few whos actions did not impact realisticaly almost 70% of the games players personal game progress.

And those that were affected perhaps had a war or inreased pirate activity because of BoB blobbing and gank squads, but hey, if not BoB, it could of been someone else in the area. I dont believe there are any decent sized corps that never had or plan on never having a war dec.

the cheating is bad enough. but if dealt correctly would not be so bad...what is a disgrace up to now is ccp attemprs to sweep it under the carpet....disgusting that any game company would do this. They forget that eve was built on word of mouth...this may now change it from positive to negative which could just as easily kill the game.

Hey, if people cheated on a sports team, folks would be upset, even if they didn't cheat against your team. This game is like that to a lot of folks, its theri baseball, and we don't like playing in a rigged game.

CCP has updated their story, and the DEV in question, T20, admitted to giving the 'illegal' BPOs to the BoB alliance. Still in question is why the leader of that alliance, SirMolle, hasn't been banned for posting the real life information, including his name, where he worked, and the phone number for where he worked, contrary to the EULA. As well, other players have been banned for doing so, and the double standard being shown looks really bad. There are other accusations of account sharing that seem to be still under investigation.
