Mandrake goes Chapter 11

Posted on Friday, 17 January 2003 by Speed, source: Fragland
Mandrake, one of the best known Linux distributions, have gone for Chapter 11, protection from bankruptcy, as Yahoo is reporting
The French equivalent to what in the United States is known as Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection marks the latest failure by the open source software movement, which sees itself an alternative to software giant Microsoft (NasdaqNM:MSFT - news), to develop profitable business models that can sustain such projects.

The filing took place on January 13, the company said. The company said that bankruptcy protection will give it breathing room to continue its operations. It said that Version 9.1 of its Mandrake Soft distribution will be ready in April.

A spokesman was not immediately available to comment.

yeah, well, Mandrake may be the best known, but surely not the best distribution.

And they tried to make a commercial linux for home-users, not directly the best market imho

Biggest problem for Mandrake were the share holders, who demanded too much diversiation in services. Let Mandrake stick to their business: make a very well user-friendly linux distribution, and nothing else.
