Mark Rein vs Intel and episodic content
On the Brighton Develop Conference, Epic Games' Vice-President Mark Rein has issued some controversial statements in his "Avoiding the pitfalls of the next generation" keynote (as you might notice on the picture on the right, he looks a bit like our own, infamous DoubleD).
According to Joystiq Rein is accusing Intel of "killing PC gaming" with their integrated graphics chipsets that apparently are still selling quite well but at the same time these chips can't play all the latest or most of the upcoming games. This means that publishers and developers are missing out on potential buyers of their products. Or maybe not everyone also wants to play games on their PC?
Gamasutra noticed another remarkable comment from Epic's head honcho. Mark has a gripe with episodic content that has been on the rise for several years now. Rein thinks that episodic content, for games at least, is a "broken business model". He has already said some time ago that Epic's Unreal Tournament franchise won't ever follow the same path of Oblivion's purchasable mini-content packs and that fans may expect similar extras to be free (just like all those bonus packs/maps for UT2004, UT2003 and the original UT).
Mark argues that episodic content actually already exists in games through fast sequels, expansions and the usual yearly updates of sports franchises.
Well, that last sentence definitely sounds familiar, doesn't it? He is a big-mouth for sure but it isn't all crazy what he says, not all good either though.

“Customers are supposed to buy half a game after 20 months, then wait six months for an episode? When I put a game down, I want to try a new one”, he said in his speech. “Episodic games that offer faster turnaround will inevitably be using a lot of recycled content, walking through the same environments and shooting the same enemies with the same weapons.”
