Microsoft: Hardcore games are easy sellers

Microsoft to target Natal first at hardcore crowd? Seems so!
Someone has seen the light: hardcore gamers are the core of the gaming industry!

Microsoft Studios spokesperson David Dennis told Gamesindustry.biz that hardcore gamers are easier to target than casual ones and that they don't need as much marketing than the average Joe Schmuck.
"The core are going to buy the games, we don't have to focus on marketing those - well, we do, but those games in a lot of ways will sell themselves because they're such immersive and intense experiences that the core is going to buy, and buy disproportionally for the Xbox,"
Once the hardcore crowd is in your pocket, it's easier to expand towards other audiences as you already have a basis that you can build on. And that's also the strategy Microsoft wants to use for getting Natal off the ground:
"Let's start with the core users to really get their attention and get them invested and committed to us as a platform. Then as we look to broaden to new audiences, we have the hardware capacity and technology innovation to continue to evolve the experience, whether that's by bringing things like Facebook, Netflix and Twitter to give people more reasons to turn the console on, or with Natal in the future, with a more social, casual and interactive controller-free gaming experience that something like Natal brings."
Hardcore gamers are a lot more critical towards games than the average user so if they like your product, you're already halfway there to get your product marketed to a large audience. And that seems to be a strategy Microsoft now claims to understand. If the most critical users like your product, the rest probably will as well.

Of course, casual stuff can also be very successful (just look at the Wii) but casual gamers are a lot less dedicated to their "platform" and therefore a bigger risk if you don't have a core audience that will follow you. Long term success relies on a large faithful userbase and that's where the hardcore gamer comes in.
