Microsoft: Those are so not Mii's, more like Night Elves
Posted on Friday, 10 October 2008 by daffeh, source: MTV Multiplayer
Many of you have been thinking it and quite a lot have been saying it out loud but Microsoft's newest addition to the Xbox 360 called 'Avatars' looks surprisingly familiar to those few that have played on a Wii.
Wanting to know where they got the mustard from, MTV Multiplayer had a chat with Xbox director of marketing Albert Penello who said they didn't copy anything from anyone, they just 'evolved' their concept.

“I remember the CES right after the Wii launched and all the [gaming] editors were asking, ‘When are you guys going to do your version of the Miis?,”
“I remember going, ‘You guys are going to slaughter us in the press if we ever do it.’ [laughs]”“You know, it’s a tough one, because it’s sort of like giving them maybe a little bit more credit for [it]…it’s not like Nintendo created the concept for having a virtual character.”
“Really, if you think about your gamerscore, your gamertag, your achievements and your identity online, that’s been a principal for us in the beginning,”
Nothing surprising up to that point because no one likes to give credit to the direct competition for something successful but then he revealed Microsofts 'official' point of view on the matter:“I remember going, ‘You guys are going to slaughter us in the press if we ever do it.’ [laughs]”“You know, it’s a tough one, because it’s sort of like giving them maybe a little bit more credit for [it]…it’s not like Nintendo created the concept for having a virtual character.”

“Nowadays, this is the kind of stuff people do, and a lot of people want to compare it to the Miis but the team, if you talk to Mark [Whitten, XBL general manager], he’ll say his inspiration came more from ['World of] WarCraft’ and seeing how dedicated people get to their characters.”
Anyway, everyone knows that when it comes to borrowing a great idea and refining it to make it your own better version, Microsoft is about the reference. So I bet those avatars will be a success. In other news:
