Microsoft goes Wii?

Posted on Thursday, 14 May 2009 by Zembla, source: Wall Street Journal
A Wall Street Journal article mentions how Microsoft plans to launch a new peripheral.

This addition to the already respectable arsenal of accessories for the Xbox 360 would allow game developers to create titles à la Wii fit. The new device namely is a sort of motion detecting camera, a controller if you will, where the body movements of the player are the inputs. Indeed, a bit like a Wiimote, or maybe because it's a camera a bit like an EyeToy. In any case, Microsoft clearly feels it could address some of the market share Nintendo is currently going for.

The technology in the gadget would mainly be developed by Microsoft itself. However, some elements of the technology may have been developped by 3DV Systems Ltd. Zvika Klier, CEO of the company, which has recently been acquired by Microsoft, could neither confirm, nor deny the news.

With E3 coming up we could see a possible unveiling of the camera there. The product isn't expected to be on the shelves for another year though.

Not a stupid move by Microsoft, eventhough a lot depends on how quickly developers would pick up the new toy, and start making games around it. All we can do now, is wait to see wether or not it'll be unveiled at E3.
