Microsoft wants you to pay for new GoW maps

In the latest 1Up Yours podcast, Tim Sweeney from Epic Games tells the world that Microsoft doesn't want new Gears of War maps to be released for free on the Xbox360 Marketplace.

EvilAvatar has the quote written:

We already released two (maps) and we have four more maps that we've built. We've been wanting to give them but actually Microsoft has been pushing back on us. They're trying to build this business model around selling additonal content for games and that's a valid idea, but we would definitely like to release more stuff for free, and we haven't been able to do so yet.

Of course, MS is the publisher of the game and as a company they want to earn money but you would think they already got enough out of GoW since it's one of the most successful Xbox360 releases ever. I guess they just don't know things like "enough profit" or "free goodies for loyal customers". Hopefully Epic can force their will in this matter.

As i said somewhere previously on this site, Microsoft have a great opportunity to release content for free and thereby gain market share because news of stuff like that spreads quickly. The industry of selling extra content for games wouldn't net microsoft even close to the profits they get from all their other stuff, so I don't see why be so greedy.

Because they feel the marketshare they currently own is not quite big enough yet, so why not expand and feed us with even more BS at a cost.

No what i'm saying is if they don't feel that their market share is big enough in consoles, then they can easily provide this content for free which would attract people, instead of charging even more money which will shoo people away towards the Wii and PS3. If anything, Microsoft is doing everything to lose market share with these stupid content add-ons for ridiculous prices.

Of course, this only makes me happy cause M$ sucks, but it's still unbelievable how short term their outlook is in some cases.

M$ will get bad press, but seriously, will that really effect them? Microsoft deal with bad press often, and still they control most markets they are involved in, they will make more money by selling the updates because people WILL pay for the updates.

I do not agree with the way they work but what they do works and a little bad press will be brushed off as usual. :/

In any case, during this summer I plan to stop using any and all Microsoft products alltogether, so I'll be free of their greed :)
