Midway cuts 25% staff

No more Area51?

Midway has announced they'll be putting 180 employees - or 25% of their work staff - out of a job. Also Midway's Austin studio, responsible for Blacksite: Area51, is going to be shut down and half of all "noncore" games are going to be scrapped.

Midway Chief Executive Matt Booty said in a statement, "These initiatives, along with the other steps we have taken this year, are a response to the specific challenges we are facing at Midway, many of which have been amplified by the current economic conditions."

The company has seen losses in each quarter and it looks like the last quarter of 2008 isn't going to be any better.

Halfway today Midway's share price dropped further to a meagre 17 cents following the announcement. If someone wants to buy a publisher, now's your chance to get one cheap. Beware of the monthly "rental" though ;)
