More info & conclusions on EVE Online scandal

Posted on Saturday, 10 February 2007 by Speed, source: Fragland
We've received further news from EVE Online player Borgholio about the problems the MMOG was facing after several members of the community accused several devs and community managers to be cheating in the game.

It seems that one of the devs indeed has been cheating as he's posted a confession:

As you might have read and heard, there were recently some allegations posted regarding developer misconduct that basically come down to:

* Developers helping (an) alliance(s) gain information they otherwise would not have.

* Developers having an unfair advantage of game mechanics.

* Developers helping themselves acquire goods in-game by means of in-house tools, otherwise not available to regular players.

All allegations mentioned above are untrue, except one. Sadly enough, the allegation regarding unlawfully obtained blueprints are, in my case, true. I’m here, laying out the facts of what happened in June 2006 so this whole issue -- which jeopardized my colleagues, my company and our community -- can be put behind us, I hope for the better.

The blueprints in question will be returned to CCP and reintroduced through a new raffle in the future.

...

Regrettably, my actions inevitably led to a shadow of suspicion being cast on a number of my co-workers, as well as Reikoku and Band of Brothers. I wish to make it clear that I acted alone and my co-workers and corp/alliance mates have been cleared of any alleged wrongdoing.

As much as this is a confession it is also a request for your forgiveness for events of which I’m truly sorry.

Details can be found here and here

He's got to lose his job. This is a much bigger scandal than we know at the moment.

They knew and did nothing. CCP just downgraded itself under SOE... a very hard thing to accomplish!

Ah yes. Even in our escapist passtimes, that pesky little concept called the "rule of law" rears around to bite our collective arses. Solve this to the majority's satisfaction and you're one up on the real world.

The CCP fanboys will defend them what ever they do, in their eyes CCP can do no wrong. But no matter what way you look at this it's cheating plan and simple, no excuses. The whole thing is really sick. I don't think t20 should lose his job over this CCP still needs a good programmer but the image of the anit-gold-farming, anit-cheater CCP is over.

I'm a CCP fanboy and i won't defend them so stop being so generalising!

CCP made probably the costliest blunder to date by not taking the harshest actions back in the summer when they internally discovered t20's corruption.

And as to firing him, it's the only way really. Once a guy has been corrupted he's unlikely to change back, and tbfh CCP has a butload of good devs, they shouldn't hurt their public image by keeping him, he's done more harm than good.

In any case, he won't be fired, the decision has already been made, which is a shame.

As to t20 being sorry, i doubt he's truely sorry. If he wasn't discovered he would have continued operating as he was, but you know what's good? Band of Brothers (BoB) now have a bandwagon of alliances fighting against them. FOr years now people have been trying to get all the other alliances to fight against them, and now they have anger as a major cause. BoB were only good while they picked off alliances on their own while making friendly relationships with the other alliances, who thought they would last, but as soon as one alliance went down, BoB declared war on the next. Good tactic considering people don't learn, but finally something has united them.

In December 2006 the corrupt developer t20 made threats that anyone who "outed" his characters again would be on his "s~~t-list" So obviously he was neither punished beyond a wrist slap nor sorry.

And it took a hacker to expose all of this.

CCP is obviously hoping that this minimal admission of guilt - coupled with attempts to lay a guilt trip on the player base - would all this matter to die down.

It didn't.

Know CCP appears ready to wear the damage of blanket bad publicity and cancelled subscriptions.

EvE is a game where players have the ability to take or destroy the fruits of months if not years of other players' in game efforts. Even bad systems like the T2 lottery were accepted because it was believed that everyone was competing on the same level: that EvE's sandbox was FAIR.

Know we know that it is fair, and that CCP employees walk among the paying players handing out gifts and favours to their friends and cronies.

If left unaddressed this will be the death of EvE.

LoL you all want proof of CCP's miscinduct, look no further than:
www.kugutsumen.com/index.php
