NIMF finds ‘Hot Coffee’ way too hot

Posted on Wednesday, 13 July 2005 by Roman, source: IGN
A new evolution in the ongoing scandal about the pornographic scenes in GTA:SA, de NIMF (The National Institute on Media and the Family) issued a warning that it was concerned about the ‘Hot Coffee’ modification. Thus following the statements of Leland Yee.

David Walsh, founder of NIMF stated
"It should be clear to everyone by now that video games do influence young people. While San Andreas is already full of violent behavior and sexual themes, the pornographic sex scenes push it over the edge. The ratings board has launched an investigation to determine if it was mislead into issuing a 'Mature' rating instead of the 'Adults Only' rating. There may even be legal ramifications since most states have laws restricting the sale of sexually explicit material to those eighteen and older."

Apart from that, Patrick Wildenborg – the Dutchman who created the “Hot Coffee” mod claims that he merely unlocked pre-existing code. In the meantime Rockstar keeps denying that this is the case and made the following official statement.

"So far we have learned that the "hot coffee" modification is the work of a determined group of hackers who have gone to significant trouble to alter scenes in the official version of the game. In violation of the software user agreement, hackers created the 'hot coffee' modification by disassembling and then combining, recompiling and altering the game's source code. Since the 'hot coffee' scenes cannot be created without intentional and significant technical modifications and reverse engineering of the game's source code, we are currently investigating ways that we can increase the security protection of the source code and prevent the game from being altered by the 'hot coffee' modification."

Despite the current re-evaluation and Rockstar’s attempts to keep the Mature rating, Leland Yee seems to gain support for his case. How this will affect things in Europe is not yet clear.

I don't remember Tomb Raider receiving a different rating or being pulled from the shelves when someone made the Nude Raider mod. GTA:SA has been a thorn in the flesh of these parental groups for a long time, and they want to use this ridiculously incorrect statement to move in for the kill. Rockstar shouldn't be worried.

It was a long time ago, tomb raider wasn't as 'realistic' as GTA can be.
And the main subject is 'the code was in the game (even if it was locked/hidden) or has the dutchguy done some reverse engineering on the code and add these "features" '

Realism is irrelevant. Tomb Raider had flesh textures for the arms and Lara had obviously curves/breasts, so it was 'there' too. The Temple of Elemental Evil originally had a brothel, which was ultimately removed for the final game, but exposed with a hack. The code was still there, just like in GTA:SA, and not accesible as an unlockable feature with a cheat code. They hacked into the game, so Rockstar is not to blame, except for not cleaning up their source code better, although I have to admit that they didn't exactly go through great lengths to remove it, a marketing buzz is always welcome.

The point is, however, that these groups claim ESRB did not notice those adult scenes while rating the game. How could they, they are never shown in the original game! It's not as if they have to rate the source code as well.

I agree, they're just picking on Rockstar and their GTA games. Why are they so concerned about the sexual part anyway, they should worry about all the violence in games not some stupid little sex scene.

IT is sure there is a lot of other games concerned.
I don't know how the ESRB works in US, perhaps the publisher/developers have to tell them 'all' the features the game contains, even the unlockable one.

But one think is sure, it just shows how stupid some people can be when they talk of something they don't even know about (im talk about that leland yee, not about you guys :) )

They say 'unlockable feature' like you just type in some cheat code and bam porn begins streaming to your monitor. It was a mod, not from the developer but from some user. It should be considered user created content like every other mod.
