NPD Group: We're not doing it anymore!
Yesterday we reported about "expected" sales numbers in the US and now we know why: the NPD Group (responsible for making & reporting on the sales of software and hardware in the US) has sent out word they won't be doing their job anymore!
Well, not exactly, but close. As of this Thursday, when the latest US figures get released, we won't be getting hardware unit sales numbers anymore. Instead, they're telling us we'll have to get them from the console makers themselves. And we all know how reliable they are, don't we?
Retail sales date will have the following changes:
Removal of monthly hardware unit sales figures A shift in the Top 10 software from sku level with unit sales for the Top 5, to Top 10 software at the title level with no unit sales Revised footnote explaining that the monthly retail data reflects new physical purchases, not total consumer spend (digital, subscriptions, mobile games, rentals, used or social network games). The NPD Group will release a total consumer spend report to press on a quarterly basis Monthly analysis from NPD industry analyst, Anita Frazier, will include software sales figures at both the sku and title level for various new releases The changes are being implemented to "address the changing sales landscape as well as updates to NPD’s corporate publishing policies"
So in short: we're not getting any hardware info anymore from an external source, and everything else will just be lists without numbers so we can't see how big the difference is and everyone can say they're doing a fantastic job. Great!
